What to do in Mallorca in Autumn: visiting the museums of Mallorca
The leaves keep falling, the days of sunshine are short, almost all of us have already made the (hated and feared) change of wardrobe, soon Halloween (or even worse, Christmas) will come. It’s official, the cold is starting to set in on Mallorca, we are temporarily saying goodbye to our magnificent beaches, and we are beginning to need to find, recommendations for what to do and see in Mallorca on the weekend in Autumn (and not only). Today we recommend you one of the best kept secrets of the Museums of Mallorca.
Hidden Recommends
With the current situation, caused by the COVID-19 virus, we must adapt to the new measures and limit our exits. For this reason, we would like to recommend an activity that will make your outing worthwhile. A place where you can enjoy yourself, in a protected environment where all the health and hygiene measures that this pandemic requires are met.
Sa Bassa Blanca Museum in Alcudia, meets all the essential requirements to be a real “hidden place” and an authentic “hidden gem”.
MUSEO SA BASSA BLANCA
The arrival to this museum, located in Alcudia, within the itinerary of the famous Es Coll Baix road and excursion, should be included as a plus of the experience of visiting this museum. The fact is that, as you walk along the road that takes you to Sa Bassa Blanca for 3 kilometres, it looks like a film scene. And there in the middle of nature, you are immersed in the beginning of what will be a true journey of beauty.
⭐ In a Snapshot
Why do we recommend visiting the Sa Bassa Blanca Museum and not another museum or art gallery, of the many on Mallorca? That is a good question. Keep reading. It is worth!
Because Sa Bassa Blanca is a jewel. A place made with love and care in the detail that, manages to wake up and/or remind us, the importance of art and beauty in our lives, a place that brings together the perfect balance between art, nature and architecture.
The museum par excellence that, allows you to travel through different countries, different ethnic groups, decades… starting with the luxury of finding yourself, in an architectural work designed by the architect Hassan Fathy.
Hassan Fathy
The famous Egyptian architect – known for recovering traditional building methods – was responsible for creating this spectacular construction inspired in a “Ribat“.
In 1994, this building became the Sa Bassa Blanca Museum, headquarters of the Yannick and Ben Jakober Foundation, while in the previous decades, it was the private residence of the aforesaid artists.
This architectural work is the only construction carried out by Fathy in Europe. It is a Hispano-Moorish construction project made up of authentic elements brought and subsequently installed piece by piece from Andalusia, Morocco and the north of Spain.
The immaculate white colour of the building, vaults, Mudejar coffering, domes, fountains and the dreamy gardens of this place will not leave you indifferent.
The Art Collection
Sa Bassa Blanca Museum is characterised by the wide diversity of its art collection. In the museum we can find works made by the artists and founders themselves, Yannick Vu and Ben Jakober. As well as works donated by recognised artists, friends of the couple, and pieces from their own & interesting private collection, which they have donated to the Foundation, with the aim of making art known to the general public.
Spaces
The Sa Bassa Blanca Museum has a perfect route to discover its extensive art collection, without being overwhelmed. A route designed in such a way that it integrates each collection into a space.
- Sokrates Room: uan underground exhibition area in which the space-time relationship is the protagonist. And where, despite the mixture of works and installations from different times and places, we find the union and balance between them. Highlights include the famous Siberian woolly rhinoceros, masks of African and Tibetan origin, as well as a spectacular installation formed by a curtain made of more than 10,000 Swarovski crystals.
- Sculpture Park: in the exterior gardens, we find great works made in granite by Ben Jakober and Yannick Vu. Without a doubt, it symbolises a direct return to the world of myths and legends. They are works that are versioned on a large scale, famous pieces installed in museums all over the world. The bull, the horse, the hippopotamus, the cat, or the famous dog from the National Museum of Tokyo are worth mentioning.
- The Rose Garden: a space designed by Yannick Vu herself, in which over a hundred different types of old and English roses are planted together with aromatic plants.
- The Main Building: along the three floors that form this building, there are different spaces with temporary and permanent exhibitions that are part of the personal history of Ben Jakober and Yannick Vu.
➕ Art
In the permanent exhibition, we find a selection of illustrations by the renowned (late husband of Yannick Vu) Italian artist, Domenico Gnoli.
There is also an interesting collection, donated to the foundation, of photographic portraits of famous artists. Among them are the designer Karl Lagerfeld, Marina Abramovic, Antoni Tàpies, Miquel Barceló, and Giorgio De Chirico, among others.
There is also a room with an exhibition of sculptures by the famous Vietnamese artist, father of Yannick Vu, Vu Cao Dam. On this same floor, there is the famous Mudejar coffered ceiling from 1498, declared a “Bien de Interés Cultural del Patrimonio de las Islas Baleares” (Property of Cultural Interest of the Balearic Islands) which, in its time, formed part of the main room of the couple formed by Ben Jakober and Yannick Vu.
More ➕ Art
We are not going to reveal all the spaces and works that you can find in this magnificent museum, but we will only tell you that there is a room where chairs take centre stage, and a staircase where you can find postcards sent by artists in historic moments, and even, just to mention a few, photos and works by Yoko Ono.
